Alh. (Dr) Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya, National President of Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners
Alhaji Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya was born on 12th July, 1962 in the ruling family of Bataiya – one of the oldest native villages in Albasu Local Government of Kano State. His father is a well-respected Imam and community leader.
His educational career started at Faragai Primary School where he received his primary education from 1969 to 1975. In 1975 he proceeded to Government College Birinin Kudu – one of most prestigious secondary schools in the old Kano State, now in Jigawa State where he successfully obtained his O’level Certificate in 1980. In the same year, he gained admission to the School of Management Studies, Kano State Polytechnic to do a 2 Year Diploma Course in Insurance.
Alhaji Kassim’s educational career was temporally suspended to enable him explore some other endeavors. But he returned in 2000 to pursue an Advance Diploma in Public Administration at Bayero University Kano (BUK). Thereafter, he enrolled and obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) at School of Management Studies, Kano from 2003 to 2005. His craving for computer literacy led to his enrollment into the popular ‘Hands-on Institute of Information Technology’ (HIIT) where he successfully bagged a Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology in 2006.
In between his studies, Alhaji Kassim had a brief stay at H Clarkson and Partners Insurance Brokers I.T.K in 1983 where he served as a Broker; and Crusader Insurance Company Limited from 1984 to 1985 as a Sales Representative. He also had a stint as a classroom Teacher at Tony Cheta School of Commerce where he taught Commerce from September 1983 to June 1984.
In the Social and Political Sphere, Alhaji Kassim has been a very active player at both grass roots level and state level. His foray into politics started at local level when he was appointed the Secretary of the Albasu Local Government Council, a position he held and served diligently, in the third Republic from 1991 –1993. This appointment helped significantly in sharpening his political skills and broadening his outlook. In 1996, he vied as a candidate for the office of the chairman, Albasu Local Government under a zero party arrangement. He was elected as a member of the Caucus Committee of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), Kano State in 1998. However, the most daring political move came with his decision to contest election at the highest level in the state. This decision was warmly received and endorsed with his nomination to contest for the office of the Deputy Governor of Kano State under the platform of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) on a joint ticket with General Bashir Magashi in 2007 general elections. As a dogged fighter for social and economic justice, Alhaji Kassim would not fail to take any decision that will help to uplift the condition of his people and bring about the rapid socio/economic development of his state.
In the corporate world, Alhaji Kassim’s career started with Sani Brothers Transport limited, a giant and reputable Transport Company owned by his maternal cousins – where he served as a General Manager between 1985 and 1991. Between 1994 and 2003 he co-founded the Bataiya Transport Services Ltd and became its pioneer executive Director, Finance and Administration. As a shrewd, Prudent and visionary businessman, Alhaji Kassim Promoted the incorporation of two other companies: Masaba Transport Services Nigeria Limited and ABKAS Global Services Nigeria Limited, transport and general purpose companies with registered offices in Kano.
His relative successes in the transport business, coupled with his track record of hard work and unrivaled commitment, endeared him to his associates in the Transport Industry which led to his nomination and subsequent election, for two (2) terms, as the Kano State Chapter Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO). His track record of performance and excellent leadership skills, again, saw to his eventual elevation to the exalted position of National President of the Association during the Association’s Congress and Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 2011 where he was duly elected unanimously. Since his election to office, Alhaji Kassim has run an all-inclusive and open leadership, based on the existing democratic structures enshrined in the association’s constitution; and in harmony with all the other elected members of the National Executive.
The following are a few of the major achievements recorded in the Association under his able leadership.
i. Democratizations of all tiers of NARTO formations Nationwide from National level to all unit formations
ii. Adherence to due process in all under takings both inter and intra NARTO engagements.
iii. The convening of National Executive Council (NEC) meeting as and when due.
iv. The improvement in the welfare of the staff through a generous review of salaries and other emoluments.
v. The provision of brand new vehicles to the National offices to help facilitate their movements, thereby projecting the image of the Association in the eyes of the public positively.
vi. Restoration of NARTO integrity and dignity by a creating an atmosphere for harmonious relationship with other sister organizations and relevant government agencies e.g. PTD of NUPENG, IPMAN, MOMAN, FERMA, PPMC, PEF etc.
vii. Protection of the rights of all transporters in the country, irrespective of whether they are registered members of the association or not such as the recent refund of all excess 5% Withholding Tax from transporters margin by FIRS.
By virtue of his position as National President of the Association, Alhaji Kassim represented NARTO on the Boards of FERMA, PPPRA and Presidential Committee on SURE – P among others. It is a matter of great joy that his active are articulate contributions in these bodies were applauded by many industry watchers and critics alike.
Alh. Kassim is a holder of an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration from University of Denver State of Colorado, USA.
He has attended various conferences and Seminars, both at home and abroad including the ‘Great American Trucking Show (GATS) in Texas, USA 2007, Trade Exhibition at Guangzhou, China; International Transport Forum at Sham – el-sheik – Egypt and International Builders Show at Las Vegas, USA.
In the home front, Alhaji Kassim has been a generous philanthropist and a source of inspiration to many young people and other less privileged masses. In recognition of his wonderful contributions in uplifting the life of his people he was, therefore, honoured with the traditional title of DURBIN ALBASU by the District Head of Albasu, Katukan Kano, Rtd DIG Bashir Albasu. This makes him one of the key advisers of the District Head in Council.
He is happily married and blessed with children.
